The stove problems we fix most often

Each symptom points to a few specific parts. Here’s where the technician starts.

Coil elements on a cooktop: burned-out stove element to replace

An element won’t heat

One burner stays cold while the others work. Often a burned-out stove element, a damaged receptacle or a faulty switch.

The oven won’t heat

The oven stays cold or only heats from the top. Bake element, temperature sensor or control board.

Wrong temperature

Recipes burn or come out raw. Temperature sensor, thermostat or a weakening element.

Touch panel frozen

Buttons stop responding or a code blinks. Touch keypad, control board or lock turned on.

An element stays on

The burner heats on high even when set to low, or won’t turn off. Infinite switch or control board relay.

The breaker trips

The electrical panel cuts out as soon as you turn on an element or the oven. Shorted element or damaged wire.

Safety first. Turn off the power at the electrical panel before removing an element: a stove runs on 240 volts.

Burned-out stove element: what to check before calling

On a stove with coil elements, a few simple checks often reveal the part at fault.

1

Swap two elements of the same size

If the suspect element heats in another receptacle, the receptacle or the switch is the cause. If it stays cold, the element is burned out.

2

Look at the element receptacle

Blackened or melted terminals cause a poor contact. The receptacle then has to be replaced along with the element.

3

Inspect the element

A blister, a crack or a burn mark on the coil means it has failed.

4

On a glass-ceramic cooktop, don’t force anything

The elements are under the glass and can’t be swapped. If the surface is cracked, stop using it.

If the element is fine and the problem remains, the switch or the control board is probably the cause. These parts are tested with a multimeter, with the appliance unplugged.

Electric oven repair: when the oven won’t heat

An electric oven uses two elements, one for baking from the bottom and one for broiling from the top, controlled by a temperature sensor. The symptom often points to the part involved.

A spark, then nothing? An oven element that fails with a spark is a classic sign. Don’t use the oven again until it’s repaired.

The top heats, not the bottom

The bake element is probably burned out. It’s often visibly split or blistered.

The oven won’t broil

The broil element or its connection is the cause.

The temperature is off

The temperature sensor is faulty or loose, or the oven needs recalibrating.

The oven won’t turn on at all

Thermal fuse, control board or power supply.

Stove touch panel not working on a glass-ceramic cooktop with timer

Stove touch panel not working: when the buttons stop responding

Before concluding it’s a breakdown, a few simple steps often fix a stove touch panel that stopped responding.

Check the control lock

Many models have a lock feature that’s easy to turn on by accident. Your manual explains how to turn it off.

Cut the power for a minute

Switch off the stove’s breaker, wait a minute, then turn the power back on. This resets the control board.

Clean and dry the panel

Grease or moisture on the keys can throw off their response.

An error code appears

Write it down. It often points to the control board, the keypad or a sensor, and helps the technician bring the right part.

When to stop using your stove

Some signs mean you should stop using the appliance right away and turn off the power at the electrical panel. Then call us: we’ll tell you whether it can be repaired before touching anything.

Stove repair questions

Your question isn’t here?

Call us or write to us, we’ll get back to you.

How much does a stove repair cost?

It mostly depends on the part involved. A coil element or a receptacle costs far less than a control board or a glass-ceramic top. We can’t give an honest number without a diagnosis, so the technician explains the cost before starting.

No. We repair electric stoves, ovens and cooktops: coil element, glass-ceramic or induction.

On many models, yes: the element unplugs from its receptacle. Turn off the power at the electrical panel first. If the receptacle is blackened, it must be replaced too, or the new element won’t last.

Yes, the cooktop surface can be replaced. Don’t use the stove in the meantime: a crack can let liquids reach the electrical components.

In most cases, yes. Common breakdowns involve accessible parts like an element, a receptacle, a sensor or a switch. If the appliance is very worn and the problem is major, we tell you frankly.
